Hi, everyone. I've been scouring craigslist for chicks, and I'd rather not pay for shipping (I know its not much but I'm a cheap skate) and some people price chicks at 3:50 when they arent even a week old, (and add that to driving costs, its a LOT) so I'd love to find somewhere local, closer to Dickson in the Nashville area. Thanks!!

What breeds are you talking about? You couldn't get chicks from me for that low of a price. Not sure why you're expecting less? There's a fair amount of expense involved in hatching chicks.

Your local farm store might be as inexpensive as it gets for chicks that might be healthy. Breeders will charge much more for chicks, depending on breed. Craig's list may have healthy birds, or maybe not. Some diseases of chickens will be on your property forever, if you make a bad choice of birds. And $3.50 is very inexpensive!!! Mary

Maybe try Atwoods or Tractor supply if you have those in your area. They sometimes have them as low as 1.99 but thats usually for sexlinks, at least in my area. Like all of the above posters have said 3.50 is a very fair price.

I paid more for that for the day old chicks I ordered in a few months I will be selling off the extras but it will be more then $10 I'm in Seymour Tn

$3.50 is cheap for chicks from a private breeder! I have paid up to $30 a chick to get what I want.

But then again, I don't buy common hatchery stock for prices like that. When I want hatchery stock, I just order from a hatchery. And then after the small order and shipping charges are added, I'm still paying more than $3.50 a chick.

Feed is expensive, and then all the care that goes into the breeder birds, and with all the other expenses involved, I wouldn't gripe about paying $3.50 a chick.

Okay, I'm sorry I was griping. I think that because in my first bird buying experience, the man was a lawyer and didn't know anything about the chickens. He just wanted to get rid of them and priced them REALLY low (75¢ per), and it skewered our (my mother and I) sense of price ranging. Thank you for the re-directon.
