Where can I buy meds for my chickens? I have one hen who is wheezing. Several posts recommend using Sulmet or VetRX or polyvisol etc. I asked my regular vet and he pretty much laughed at me and said he did not know anything about chickens. And what about supliments? What are the brand names and where do I purchase them?
I sure don't want to lose my flock.
Thanks for the help.

The best resource I've found is www.firststatevetsupply.com. Peter Brown (the Chicken Doctor) isn't really a vet, but he can get a lot of veterinary supplies and will help you get through difficult situations, if you need additional help. He has supplements, vaccines, dewormers, antibiotics, lots of other stuff too.

Most illness is secondary to nutritional problems...
The NRC requirements of which the commercial feed mixes are based upon are outdated... nutritional deficiencies can occur quite easily even when you give them a quality commercial mix so, my advice is to supplement regularly with a good complete general nutritional/vitamin supplement like AviaCharge 2000 (you can order online from McMurray or Strombergs)

I've started using Avia Charge 2000 with my chickens. I've noticed that they are doing better. Less picking etc. I got it from McMurray, but I don't mix it as strong as they say. I looks like you are feeding them mud when you do. I did at first to give them a kick in the pants toward better health. Seems like winter is hard on them nutritionally, goodies are limited this time of year.

you dont have to put it in their waterer...you can also mix it into the cooked oatmeal you mix in with their feed

Another good inexpensive resource for stuff like that DE and supplements is Hoegger Goat Supply at www.hoeggergoatsupply.com. Their prices are generally pretty good, compared to some. We bought kelp from them and our chickens are thriving on it...maybe a little too much! They are all fat, sassy, and happy.

Not to change the subject too much, but dlhunicorn, dyou think we should cut back on the kelp meal a bit? We give them a sprinkle on their food every day, and they are all gaining weight, as I said...it is really cold here now.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to say the little chicken, her name is Gold, is now doing much better. So far none of my other kids have gotten sick. Knock on wood! I gave her yogurt, oatmeal and DE as a snack and mixed vinegar in her water. I put her in a cage so I could monitor her food consumption. She ate lots and lots. My husband also went to Walmart and bought her some live crickets. He is such a good Chicken Daddy. Thanks so much for the advice. I also ordered a few meds for my critter first aid kit.
