where do I place my roosts?

My coop (that I'm still building) is very narrow--only 2 1/2 feet wide--so I need multiple roosts to accomidate 6 birds. How far appart do i place them? Should they all be at the same height? And what dimentions of wood should I use? How do I make sure they don't poop on each other while they're roosting?

I have my roosts 1ft apart from each other. Mine are all at the same height this way the birds don't fight for the top roost. I use 2x2's for my roosts they work great. Mine don't poop on eachother there is enough space in between the roosts.
