Where do you get your chicks?

If you don't hatch your own where do you get yours? I am curious about ordering chicks online. Makes me a bit nervous knowing they are being bounced around in shipping. What have you experienced? Also any recommendations for quality websites
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've always gotten mine locally. They are always healthy and active. However, they are very poor stock. I know that Meyer hatchery and mcmurry hatchery offer good quality chicks. Mypetchicken is also a reliable source.

You should get chicks at your local hatchery.It can be dangerous for chicks if they are shipped.

You can see if local feed stores will carry chicks this spring. They will also be from mail order hatcheries but you won't have to deal with any problem chicks yourself. Or you can order online yourself. The vast majority of chick shipments arrive happy and healthy. Meyer, McMurray, and Ideal are some of the more popular hatcheries. They won't be exhibition birds. They will be good egg layers and a backyard flock.

In hatching season one hatchery may hatch 80,000 to 100,000 chicks a week. There are several hatcheries out there we buy from. With that many chicks shipped there will occasionally be some problems, but the vast majority arrive happy and healthy.
