I bought my first chicks from a breeder 6 years ago. I don't remember exactly what I paid for them, but it wasn't like today's inflated fad prices!! He is now deceased unfortuantely. I still have 2 or 3 of those original hens plus their decendents and they continue to lay nice dark eggs for me. You need to join some of the Marans groups. You can get in touch with breeders who sell their eggs at fairly reasonable prices compared to the insanity of the auction sites.

We bought ours from Murray McMurray. Two issues with them, though: One thing is the Marans only come straight run, so of course, we got three males, no females. Second thing is that they have a genetic defect where they are born with crooked toes and their offsprings have crooked toes. NOT good enough to breed from, but good enough for the farm.

Our Cuckoo Marans rooster is a total stud, though. STUD I TELL YOU!

Just remember a lot of the hatchery birds don't lay very dark eggs.

That is what i meant. I didn't want a hatchery chick

I got mine from a lady who got them from a hatchery. I have no clue which one. My hen lays very light eggs. And I got some this summer from a private breeder. Who has now become a dear friend. I just hatched out from her stock Blue and Splash marans!!!

In the pic is splash, blues, and cuckoos!
