I was thinking about possibly getting a few Silkies for brooding.... And the hatchery that my feed store goes through doesn't sell them. So I want to know where you get yours from, and how they turned out as far as temperament, broodiness, etc. How was your customer service? How many did you lose as chicks?

Thanks,

I found a great breeder in my area and also found one who would ship in another state. I asked for pet quality only. To my untrained eyes they are the most beautiful silkies ever and thats all that counts. Now of course I want another coop for the silkies for next summer but the is a whole diff thread.

If you are just looking for broodies I would go with hatchery stock. They tend to have smaller crests which make them better able to see and avoid predators etc.

I 3rd that. Tell her you just want them for broodies and she will hook you up with as many PQ but nice looking pullets/hens you want.

Back when I had Silkies for show, I had some gorgeous birds from her.

What hatchery should I go to, if I choose to go that way?? I peeked into a few but didn't find anything!

It depends on what look you are wanting. Some hatchery silkies are not so pretty. Very little fluff. But, if your just wanting a pet quality bird, I think alot of people order from MPC.

I only buy mine from Sunshine Silkies, Brens Birds of Paradise and Fawkes Feather Farms. They are not cheap, but well worth the money.

I got a VERY nice foster mom hen from Mcmurrays hatchery
i got ten from a feed store that got them from them, and ALL of them lived.
they even won two, 1st's, two 2nd'd, 2 3rd's, and a Best of Show at the county fair.
they were a very exciting batch.

I recommend you go with the white or the blacks. better quality and temperment from hatcheries.
Hope i helped
