I do because there MAY be a weasel or something else small that COULD get in and get them. Occasionally I leave it open, maybe 2x in the summer. You just never know. I have a very secure run, but it is my piece of mind that they are safe. Merry

Hey!

Well, My family travels... all the time! My brother is on a baseball college team and he pitches. So, we are always following him around to Florida, West Virginia, Maryland, etc. I have my neighbor take care of my animals. I worked out a deal with her, that when she goes away... I take care of her animals in turn for taking care of mine. So, I don't actually have to pay her... I just give her my time and she gives me hers. She takes great care of my animals! She takes care of the dogs, cats, guineas, chickens and my horse!

we are going to skyland resort on skyline drive in virginia. into the wilds, as it were. but, i have four new chicks, almost 2 weeks old now, and the three grown ones, that i need to have someone take care of. so my son, his wife and step son will be spending a week over here to take care of my petting zoo (7 chickens, 2 cats, 2 parakeets, 1 dog, 1 hamster, 1 hermit crab and 2 fish). i convinced them it would be a weeks worth of saved electricity at their house, plus the added perk of not having all these critters transferred into their home. we'll just have to see what next year brings.

This year we will be going to Long Neck, Delaware. We usually have Family stop in and take care of our birds. During these rare vacation moments, i actually put up a temporary run, so the birds can still roam outside(normally free range) but I dont have to worry so much. They seem to adjust to the run rather well, but are very excited when I come home and take it down!

We go to the South Coast to a place called Narrawalie for 1 week each January. We get my dear next door neighbour to do the feeds and pay her.
I have my own petsitting business so I am usually the one people call when they go away.
I know it's stressful so its important that you trust your sitter to look after them as well as you would.
It really is hard to find a suitable carer when everyone is so busy, look for someone who has life skills and has a great rapport with your pets.
Have fun

We go to Long Beach, NC every Sept. after everyone else is back in school. It's still warm, but we have the beach to ourselves-not quite, but it's not crowded.
I don't know who'll take care of my animals this year. I'd tried a neighbor girl, but her standards of care were lower than mine, and she moved away a few years ago. A friend of my sister said hed never do it again, after switching off with my sister-in-law fo a week. He said my chickens didn't like him. Last year my sister and her husband couldn't go because of his work, so she took care of them. She called me one day saying they had ''waddled past her'' as she was getting their feed, and had gotten away, how should she get them back in? Eventually she tried just using their names and telling them to go in their house, and was surprised when it worked. She has a new baby and is going with us this year, though, so I haven't figured out what I'll do.
Any volunteers?

We tried to go away once (for 4 days).
A big family reunion held at Branson Mo. Had everything paid for, employed a neighbor boy to work for us for 2 weeks to get the routine down, and care for the animals while we were gone. 1 day before we were to leave, he decided it was too much work & backed out. Couldn't get any refunds either.

So, we don't go anywhere unless it is a day trip, or an overnight one. We leave after all chores are done, make sure everything has plenty of water & feed, come home early the next day, and pray a whole lot.

We never go away anytime near a full moon, it seems we have a high predator increase then and also after a couple of days of heavy rains.

My GP dogs are great, but they are only 6 month old pups, and aren't that reliable yet.
