Where do you guys get slaughtering supplies? Scalpel/ really sharp knife, killing cone, etc?

Hey all,
We slaughtered a bird a while back, it didn't go the best, and then butchering it was a little difficult without the really, really sharp knife. I was almost certain we had one sharp enough, I have a kitchen knife that cuts the crap out of me almost every time I use it, but anyway... On one tutorial I was reading, they mentioned that they used a scalpel. Where do I get my hands on one of those? We have another old stew hen that needs to go to the pot soon.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Ok, we'll be careful then. These are suitable for slaughter as well, then. Good to know!

The best knife u can get is called

Havalon

They have scalpel replacement blades

My husband bought me one and it is really awesome!! I go about 7 chickens between blades unless it seems like its getting dull before that point. They are easy to change, inexpensive and make processing go so much faster!

I see. Does the fact that it's a flip blade make it harder to clean? My husband was worried about that.

Are you talking about the actual butchering or the processing? For the actual slitting necks part, I found this time around that I really enjoyed using a utility knife with "ultra sharp" blades. A blade went through 4-5 chickens easily and I'd change it out. I found that using my processing knife to slit the necks killed the blade pretty quickly because of the feathers, but the utility knife really helped me be confident with each cut, which is a big deal for me (I'm a wuss and would totally lose my nerve if I made a bad killing cut!).

Well, both. Butchering wasn't great, and processing went really slowly.

Not really because of the way the handle is designed, the space is plenty big between the two parts of the handle to spray out no problem.

This is the first folding knife I've used in about 18 years for that exact reason. I think within the next few years everyone will use some version of these knives they are that great
