Where does a chicken build a nest?

Found my wandering hen. She was indeed on a nest and had been attacked - which is why I found her, by following the feather trail. Fortunately she wasn't hurt, just missing some feathers and I have rehomed her to the coop where she is setting on her eggs nice and safe. Many thanks to all who helped with my initial query.
