Where does My Pet Chicken get their chicks?

Meyers. I live in PA closer to Meyers than MPC, so I ordered from Meyers. Also, Meyers will send a smaller order. Three, I think. MPC would only send that many if I lived within a certain range of a large city.

Thanks, Shelly. I was wanting some more Welsummers, and I didn't want to have to order 25 chickens, so I was hoping to get some from MPC. They show them as available, but when I called Meyer they said they wouldn't have any til the end of October.

Funny that this thread is going right now. I, too have to order minimum 5 birds from MPC, AND pay $35.00 S&H, because of the nature of the shipment. That brought my calculated total to about $50.00....for 5 chicks, or, $10.00/chick.

Another hatchery required 25 birds, and approximately $10.00 S&H. That brought my calculated total to almost $90.00, or about $4.00/chick.
I think I'm gonna take my chances at the small animal auction 45 minutes from home, where I got "Fanny" and her 5 brothers. I've been doing business with them (for my horses and tack, etc.) since 1985. They run up individual bids, but not everybody takes all of the chicks, so they offer them at that price until they are sold. That means, I don't have to buy an entire clutch of 25 or more birds, or, I can buy a few from one clutch and a few from another. Last time, I paid $1.00/chick, and in today's money, my gas will run under $10.00. So, THAT could mean, even if I pay $4.00/bird (which I might, because I'm considering a young turkey or two,) my total costs will be $30.00-$40.00

Also, I'll take my notebook and chart the #'s I'd like to bid on--healthy birds, breeds I'd like to own. I've even seen swans, peacocks and pheasant at this sale, as well as rabbits, goats and ferrets, too.

You know, in this economy, you just have to pull out your calculator.

I wanted to reorder from Ideal which is where I got my first set of chicks this summer, but they're out of Welsummers for the year.

Their prices are reasonable, and their minimum order is $25 in birds which comes out to about a dozen chicks. I got my first batch of 26 for about $3/a bird, shipping and all. Not too shabby.

I'm trying to find some folks who I can chick pool with and meet the minimum 25 birds. If I can't I'll just wait til this spring and place an order.

I'm always hesitant to buy from an auction. My folks bought some older birds when they first got their chickens, and those girls had mites. They've been fighting scaly leg mites ever since. Just makes me nervous what I might bring into my current flock.
