Where should I get my chicks? I live in town and I only want 3. Should I get them at a local tractor supply or order them? If I should order them, what's the best place to order from? I live somewhere cold so I was thinking about getting a Buff Orpington, a Brahma, and a Wyandotte.

Where you live? Perhaps there are other local sources.....maybe even BYC members who are selling chicks...

If you type SO Dakota into the search bar, there are threads from others in your state...
I don't know about TSC, I had the impression you had to get straight run, this may be wrong, but if you can only have 3, you don't want any roosters. Anyone want to chime in on this?
I would check your local craigslist. I know there are hatcheries that will ship small numbers of chicks in warmer weather. Maybe My Pet Chicken. There may be hatcheries in your state or neighboring states....there are hatcheries in Iowa such as McMurray and Hoover.
Any of you out there have input on these?

If you buy at Tractor Supply you'll probably be able to select from pullets rather than just straight run, but you have to buy at least 6. I bought mine at Atwood's last year and didn't know this rule until I got there. Luckily I had room for 6 chicks. I bought pullets but did still end up with one rooster. If you can only have 3 I'd follow the above advice and look for locals selling chicks.

Starting in April the minimum order for Meyer Hatchery will be 3! You'll have to order soon if you want to reserve specific breeds for delivery as soon as possible in April though.
