Hi all, I'am very very new to sewing. I'am just starting out. I live in a very small town we don't even have a walmart, but I can go to a town over. My question is where to find fabric that is kind on the cheap side to practices on? The walmart one town over does not carry fabric. I want to learn how to sew so bad my DH has to dew a lost button on for me.
You can sometimes get good deals on eBay. Fat Quarter Lots are usually pretty reasonalable. Check out the Goodwill, Salvation Army or other cheapy store for clothes, sheets, etc... You can cut them up to practice on.
There is a thread on here somewhere by NanaKat that has a list of different resources for quilters and sewers. I'll see if I can find it.

I use to teach beginning sewing classes, and I also taught Special Needs High School kids how to sew. Sewing is not difficult, in fact it is quite satisfying if you have the desire to learn. The best advise I can give you is to learn your machine and how to trouble shoot before anything else. Read your manual that came with the machine or download it from the manufacture on-line. This will cut down dramatically on your frustration level. One of the first actual "sewing" steps after learning about the machine is to sew on straight lines, curvy lines, circles and squares that were drawn on paper. Once you learn how to sew on the lines, pivet, etc. (VERY IMPORTANT: Change to a new needle) go on to 5" x 18" fabric strips that are doubled. (I would recommend some light colored fabric and draw lines on them). There is a lot more.
Let me see if I can find some of my old lesson plans, maybe I can put together an on line beginners class.

OH WOW THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I was not sure where to start.LOVE it!! Thank you again!!
and thank you all for the info I never thought of some of those places..
Getting fabric from Walmart will be hard. Walmart has stopped their fabric dept.
At least from VA to DE I loved getting the fabric there, cheap, great selection and had good clearance prices. The patterns were cheap too!!
I am not impress with Joanns, at least in the store. I go to Simplicity (sp) website and they have some good buys on patterns.
