My chickens have been having some issues, got a fecal done. Heterakis gallinarum and Acaridia were found. Vet said to treat with Fenbendazol, but where am I supposed to buy it? TS sells 25 mg gum paste. Vet recommended 25 mg per bird for 3 days. That's 2,625 mgs. Where am I supposed to buy this for the birds?

USA, MD

I'm not an expert, but the 25 mg is per dose.

.25 ml per each pound the bird weighs.
A 4 pound bird would get 1.0 ml.

NOT 25 mg.

We purchased some at Tractor Supply. It was called Safe-Guard and was around $12.99 for the gel paste. You have to put a pea size drop in their mouth or in a piece of bread. I really think the easiest way to de-worm them is to get Safe-Guard Aqua-Sol and put it in their water. That's not sold at Tractor Supply Company or Farmer's though--at least not here. You have to buy it online.

Please don't use the 'pea sized' dosing. Correct dosing is .23 ml per pound of bird weight. Peas sized is very subjective and can lead to under or over dosing. Over dosing is rarely an issue, but underdosing can potentially result in medication resistant parasites.

Get a syringe from you feed store. The Panacur and SafeGuard horse paste are fenbendazole 10 %, and the SafGuard Liquid Goat Wormer is 10% as well. Draw up 0.25 ml (1/4 ml) per pound of weight, and give it for 3-5 days. If using the liquid, be sure to shake it well since it will settle.

I was looking up the dose online and a reputable website telling us the dosage said "pea-size" meaning the size of a green pea which would be the size that you are talking about. Pea size actually makes sense.

'Pea sized' is not a good way to measure anything, especially for a small animal like a chicken. It's not 'one size fits all'! Chickens can weigh 1.5 pounds, up to sixteen pounds! And peas vary in size a lot too. Just use the fenbendazole liquid and a syringe!!!
This drug is quite forgiving, as far as toxicities are concerned, but missing an effective dose to kill the targeted parasites is not useful.
