Hi,

I have never had quails and I would have to start my own production of quail's eggs for my own consumption. My aunt had them and as a little girl I remember enjoying taking care of them when I went visiting. I would appreciate advise from Quails experts. What should I have the keep them happy and laying eggs. Also where can I buy them? I live in a small city 20 min from San Francisco.

All advises are welcome!

You can usually pick up some hatching eggs from the auction listings in this forum. As for what you need to keep them happy, look under the quail forum. There is a sticky at the top of the listings that talks about basic care for quail

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Aren't the hatching eggs to difficult for a new in the subject like me?

lol if you are talking Coturnix you will have no problems hatching them.. Some say (jokingly) that you can set them on the counter next to the incubator and they'd hatch.. "Roaches of the Quail World" If I can hatch them as shipped eggs anyone can.

Do you have an incubator? If so, it's really easy to incubate.

Let me know if you want some! I need to test some shipping skillz...

Mine are happiest when they have a nice big dust bath, straw to burrow under, plenty of good quality game bird feed, a full water container and ground to scratch on.

they can live in a wire cage, but in my humble opinion i think their alot happier on a solid floor. Especialy a well protected (that means cinder blocks and electrified barbed wire to most people) outdoor pen. But their one of the easiest birds i'v kept, and its not tough to give them what they need.

Hi, I'm 20 mins south of SF. I got a batch of eggs from ebay from a guy in Arkansas and another I drover over to Danville (Jameskchandler he's on here too, I found him through craigslist, and I think he has birds to sell) and picked up eggs and drove back over the bridge and put them in my incubator. We got 31 eggs and now have 21 week olds. Hatching is so much fun, and they are too cute to miss out on those tiny chicks.
