I'm hoping to raise ducklings this summer once again and while I would like to stick with mallard ducklings like I've raised in the past, my mother wants me to raise wood ducks since she's tired of seeing the ducks we raise be harassed by other mallards out on the lake during mating season and would like to raise something that's "prettier". I'm in California between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, and was wondering if anyone knew any sites or even people who sell wood duck babies who are either near by or could ship. Thanks!

I think if Wood Ducks are native to your area(or any other wild duck species), you have to have a permit to raise them. Don't quote me, but I just read something about that somewhere recently

check with you state laws first regarding native wildlife. I know even tho mallards are native too they fall under "domestic mallards" when bought, not so wood ducks. I would think every state is pretty similar as in you need a permit to buy/sell and the birds are not allowed to mingle with wild ducks. So no releasing onto a pond or anything unless that pond is fenced to keep wild ducks out and the ducks pinioned(tip of the wing clipped off as a duckling) so they are unable to fly away.

Ok, I was wondering about the legal issues surrounding wood ducks. Thank you very much for better informing me!

If you live near a pond or lake, you can set up nest boxes for them to nest in. It might take a while before they will use them, but at least you'll have them around to enjoy.

Have ya'll ever seen a video of them little buggers jumping out of holes in trees 20ft up??!! Those little bitty chicks, jump, bounce, and are up on their feet and moving!!

ETA--this one is them jumping from a tree into a pond!
