Where to measure the temperature in bator????

I hope someone can shed some light on this for me... my incubator says that the temp should be 99.5 but I hear and read that the temp should be 100-101 on top of the eggs. So is the 99.5 temp for the rack? Should I lie the thermometer on top of my eggs and if so what should I have that temp at????

Take temp readings at the top of eggs and anywhere in that temp range is fine.

If the incubator has no fan then it should be about 101 at the top of the egg.

If there is a fan then the temp should be 99.5 anywhere around the middle. Placement is not as key as the one with no fan.
