I am getting ready to place my order for Cornish cross chickens. In the past I have bought them at TSC, but this year I’m going to be getting several more and trying to cut cost. The best price I have found is at purely poultry and Welp. Does anyone have any opinions on either of these. Thanks in advance.

there are many different opinions as to whom to order. I would suggest to review threads on the ones you are ordering from to see what others have said. and remember that distance and weather may effect how the chicks may suffer some stress from either. also you need to contact the post office to let them know you are ordering so they can call you when they arrive so you can pick them up in person. I have no idea if they give a discount but ask at tractor supply if you could order what you want from them and if you can get a discount from what they normally charge. you lose nothing if you ask.....

I agree with you. I personally like buying my chicks at TSC how orders from McMurray hatchery. I can usually keep tabs on them and not buy them until they're already a week old and rarely have any die this way, plus they're easy to get started. I tried last year to get a discount on buying larger quantities and they wouldn't do it. I also tried Southern States, but they wouldn't go for it either. I may try to call around and see if I can find a store that will at least get close to the same price.

were you buying out of the bins on the floor or trying to special order thru them? I know many stores (perhaps not all) will let you order chicks thru them and I thought if ordered it MIGHT be discounted since they had a guaranteed sale on those chicks. it might be a little more than the hatchery price but less than the sales floor price.

I've tried both ways with no luck. At the TSC I buy from they are actually cheaper than it is buy direct from McMurray (for smaller quantities), but they're still about 50 cents a chick higher than Purely Poultry and Welp. When buying 10 to 20 chicks the 50 cents doesn't make enough difference to deal with the shipping, but when buying 200-300 it does.

My only consideration for ordering is where were their parents raised and is that environment similar to mine. My current flock came from Polk, OH, and well it is nothing like my environment in Coastal Deep South Texas. This summer it really showed via heat stress being expressed in half of my flock.

FWIW that is just one lesson I have learned. Should I decide to add to my flock I would be ordering from Ideal in the future as they are a 5 hour drive north for me near Austin, TX.

We were doing some research on getting chicks. Since we live in OH, we decided to go with an OH hatchery. One place we called was Eagle Nest Hatchery and inquired about heritage breeds. However, they also sell "performance Hybrids" which look to be for meat or for egg production specifically. While we didn't ask about this category, we were given a per chick price on the heritage breeds of $2.08 per pullet and $0.65 per male, which is quite a bit less expensive than other hatcheries and all we were looking to order was less than 25 chicks. This place is a small hatchery, and I did not ask about shipping rates since I could pick up an order (about an hour and a half from me). Good Luck.
