where to put pullets?

I am may be getting 4 pullets soon. The coop is not started and will not be finished before we go out of town in the middle of June.

Any suggestions on what to do with them until after we get back into town?

I thought of a really large box, like what watermelons are in at the grocery. Put plastic at the bottom, newspaper, and tons of pine shavings on that. Then put a screen on top of it so they can not fly out. I would keep the box in my kitchen since one of the neighbors will be feeding and watering the girls while we are gone.

Does anyone else have suggestions?

The pullets were hatched on April 10th.

Maybe you can try to find a large dog crate...the largest...on CL. I know my pullets out grew their makeshift brooder by 8 weeks and had to go the coop.
