Good morning! So yesterday I lost a chicken 4yr old for no reason I could find...even took her to work and took a radiograph of her to see if there was something obvious going on inside. She was weak and emaciated, and did not want to eat or drink...also had diarrhea. Anyway after treating Rosie with SQ fluids and tube feeding she passed way yesterday afternoon:( I want to treat my whole flock with antibiotics and worm them. Do I use Sulmet or tetracycline? The tetracycline is probably safer but the Sulmet will treat more things according to package. Another concern is, if I use the Sulmet and 14 days later start selling eggs do I need to worry about someone with a Sulfa allergy having a reaction? What have you guys done in the past? Thanks

I wouldn't give an antibiotic at all. There's no reason to think it will do anything good, particularly if she is the only one sick. At that age, my best guess would be a reproductive tract issue. I would probably worm, and of course check or treat for lice/mites. If you want to do something proactive about at least some infections, get some Oxine and a humidifier (link below.)

21 days is more of a standard withdrawal period for eggs after any medication.

Agreed.
Most likely your flock needs to be wormed. I dont recommend antibiotics.

Welcome to BYC. Did you do a necropsy? If you still have her, open her up and check her out. Sorry, don't mean to sound insensitive, but it you might learn a lot from doing it.

Thank you...I do have her in the outdoor freezer. I'm a vet tech, so maybe I can con on of the vets into doing it. I just want to know what happened so I can keep the others healthy. Plus I have 35 chicks in my spare room in the basement! Doing need them getting sick, however I do wash up well in between the big girls and little girls:)

Next time, don't freeze her, just refrigerate.
