I think split order with cornish cross and sexlink or other dependable layers like Rhode Island Reds is a good idea if you want meat and eggs.

Dual purpose birds take longer to reach a mature weight and so their meat will be tougher, some say more flavorful, but thats a matter of taste IMO.

Better to raise x ammount of cornish cross for 2 - 2 1/2 months for meat and have a separate laying flock you can have as pets more or less.

Also for shnitz-n-giggles you might consider getting a couple of exotics to "just have around"

It all really depends on your meat and egg needs vs the space and time you have for your flock.
