Morning! I am new to this group and hope to learn a lot. I've been doing a lot of reading on chickens. I would like to raise chickens for eggs. I have 25 acres and live in the Buffalo NY area. I am wondering what breed is best for me as I am a beginner.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Debbie

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! So far as breeds go here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://www.albc-usa.org/documents/chickenbreedcomparison.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds
So far as more egg layer breeds go, for egg numbers alone, the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs and the commercial White Leghorns and crosses for white eggs are probably the most popular layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets though broody), Australorps, Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular very breeds that usually have nice temperaments, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. If you like a colorful egg basket, the Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for those dark brown eggs.
You might also like to check out your state thread to see what breeds people in your area have that htey are happy with. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/231485/ny-chicken-lover

I am new as well, and was wondering about breed compatibility. I would like to keep Barred Rocks and Easter Eggers together, but obviously they need to get along. Does anyone have advice about this, or ideas for viable substitutes if these won't go together? Thank you!

Welcome to BYC!

Lots of great breeds out there that make great layers, food for the table and pets. Kelsie has left you both with some great links to follow.

As for breeds that get along, most all breeds will get along just fine, especially if they are raised together. It is best to keep Top Hats and some Silkies together by themselves, but most all other breeds do not know the difference in their breeds and get along just fine.

Welcome to our flock!

Thank you! I would definitely get day old chicks, so in this case I probably wouldn't have any problems. I had been considering Top Hats, but if that won't work then there's no real problem -- I have heard very mixed opinions about their laying abilities, and I really want chickens for the eggs.
