I have marans, orpingtons and Faverolles.
Currently, one marans female is broody, she has 14 eggs under her belly and I think it is too many.
Some eggs are coming out her belly occasionally and I tried to get them to put in incubator several times but she is guarding them like a dog.
I think broody hens are very useful when I hatch eggs.
Which breed go to broody easily and the most?
I have read about this topic before, several folks recommended cochin and silkies.
Is there any other breed?
Are cochins and silkies reliable moms??
Thanks in advance!

I've heard Barred rocks and Orpongtons are really good moms and they do go broodie, however I have those 2 breeds and they have not gone broodie yet.
However I do have a silkie who is broody all the time and has been a great mom. One time one of her chicks jumped on the little kiddie pool i used for my ducks my little silkie hen was soooo brave that she jumped in and somehow pushed the baby out i came out running and she was still in the water flapping her wing and trying to get out but she did saved her baby.
I was gonna regime her but after seen her do that decided that she was a full time permanent resident in my coop

American Gamefowl with out a doubt have to be the most broody hen you can get.
Last year 25 hens started hatching chicks around March (with snow on the ground) and didn't stop till late November. This year looks like it will be the same.

My true ameraucana's made the best mom's and always were broody. My EE on the other hand Never went broody.

Crosses between two different breeds known for broodiness are generally much better broodies than their pure-bred counterparts. If you are looking for an authentic, non-artificial, "green," and "sustainable" incubator, you can't do better.

The very best broodies I've ever known are American Fighting Game chickens. They are awesome setters, love to go broody, are very determined setters, and are the best, most protective mothers there are on this earth!!!

They aren't much good for anything else... but wonderful mothers!
