I am looking at getting about 20 chicks here are the breeds I am liking thus far...

Black Sex Link
Golden Laced Cochins
Black Copper Maran
Black Australorps
Easter Egg
RIR
Buff Brahma (Might not be able to get due to not available)
White Jersey Giant

Out of these which would you get a roo of? I could probably get two roos and be fine with 20 ladies. Thoughts? I will eventually hatch my own eggs. I like each of these breeds for either their uniqueness, egg laying abilties, personalities and meat bird. Do I just pick my top birds and get a roo in that? What would you do?

I currently have 7 girls and one roo and I like my roo I think he is a plymouth rock he is still young around 9 months but he is really good at his duties and accepts new girls into the clan pretty easily. Doesn't roo too much just when he is calling the girls.

EE's and black sex links are basically mutts. EE's can look like anything and a black sex link rooster will be barred like a barred rock. But mutts will be basically what you will make unless you only hatch out the eggs from the one breed with a matching rooster. So are you wanting bigger mixed birds or colored eggs?

If you're looking for egg production, I'd nix the Cochin and Brahma. The Giants are big, but also slower to mature, so personally I'd not get that breed rooster.

I have a preference for green eggs, so I'd get an Easter egger rooster. I also like barred birds, so I'd get a bsl roo. To me, solid black or red birds are boring, so I'd not get the Aussie or Red. But those are my choices......

If you like darker eggs, go for the Marans rooster. If you got a Marans and an Easter egger roosters, you could have two chances for nice olive eggers.

Egg production but also can slaughter for meat. Easter eggers seem nice and yes I like those maran dark eggs those are pretty neat looking. Also want a roo that protects his girls too.
