Which breed of rooster would you choose?

I agree with the others- don't order any males, because chances are good you'll end up with a few male "packing peanuts." Especially this time of year when it's colder. As far as a breed of rooster that is less noisy- I don't think there's any real such thing. It just depends on the temperment (and sometimes place in the pecking order) of the chicken. I have 4 EE cockerels and a Silver Lakenvelder cockerel and they crow all the time, particularly the Lakenvelder. The only one who doesn't crow is my EE cockerel who is the lowest in the male pecking order. So far my EEs are good boys, but the Lakenvelder is a demon with feathers.

IMO EEs are the way to go they are my favorite kind of breed for a rooster to be. I've had 3 (2 are deceased) and I love them. They are handsome and have such great personalities! Here is what you might get if you get an EE roo.

This is Phoenix my current EE roo.

I started off with 35 straight run chicks of various breeds. They grew up all together and I was able to chose my roosters from quite a variety. Of the BBS Giant Cochins, Polish, Cuckoo Marans, Ameraucanas AND Easter Eggers I chose to keep 1 white Ameraucana and 2 EEs. I had to eliminate my favorite roos of the bunch because they either didn't get along in the flock or didn't get along with me.

I guess having done it that way I would prefer to do it again. More options to choose from, but you do have to deal with the extras. Also my 3 roos having been raised together get along great. It's is one more than I need for 17 hens, but I've got another batch of teens coming up and some more pretty young roos to look at

He's a great looking rooster! I would be entirely happy with one just like him!! A guy like that should be able to mix up a flock very well

Someone mentioned the extra shipping chicks. One of the reasons I'm going with Meyer is that it's my understanding that they don't do that. You pay extra for smaller orders but you don't end up with the added roosters. With my luck they would all be Rhode Island Reds

Thanks and with MPC you can request for no packing peanuts. They will put in more bedding for the chicks.

If you want broodies, get some Cochins or BOs. As far as roos, if you want to be sure to get a nice, sweet one, get a Jersey Giant. You can always get rid of any roos that might come with your shipment. I have had 3 BJGs, and they have all been "gentle giants".

I'm thinking a Buff Orpington for exactly that reason. I hear Cochins are nice but I really don't like feathered legs and feet. I very much like the coloration of Salmon Faverolle roosters but they have that same issue. How big are Jersey Giant roosters? and what would they be like with smaller hens like Campines and Lakenvelders

I vote for Wyandotte! I have two- a blue splash and a red laced blue. They are very gentle and easy going. I only hear a little crowing in the morning. Being laid back does not mean that they don't take their job seriously. Blue (the blue splash) doesn't mind me coming in the coop and doing what ever I want, but if I make a hen upset he is right there in a heartbeat. He portects his girls. so will the other one, he is just younger. And talk about beautiful- they are so pretty. I have has Ameraucana, Rhode Island Red, and Barred Rock. None of those lasted long. But I have had the Wyandottes for about 18 months with no problems. I love hatching and have very colorful barnyard mixes.

The wyandotte hens go broody often enough and do hatch their babies. I love this breed.

How big are Jersey Giant roosters? Full grown can be up to 13 lbs. Jasper is only about 5 mos old, and is pretty big already. I have a Dominique, and there hasn't been a problem. Like I said, JMHO.

Billfields, even if a hatchery does not send extra chicks, they sometimes make mistakes in sexing them. They guarantee about 90% accuracy, so you could end up with one rooster for every 10 females you order. Some people never seem to get roos no matter how many they order, but I'm one of the lucky ones who seems to get at least 10% roos with each order.
