Which Breed?

I love my Blue Australorps.

Almost everything about the Australorp SOP is "medium" but while that could sound boring it actually means that they perfectly match my mental image of the word "chicken".

They're calm but not lethargic.

Active but not flighty.

Excellent layers, but can go broody.

And absolutely beautiful.
That is what I have been hearing! Tractor Supply STILL has not gotten their other chickens in yet though...

Plus one for Australorps!

My first flock was 3 Black Australorps and 3 Italian Buttercups. The Buttercups were pretty, but very flighty, laid a small number tiny eggs, would go tear into you if you wanted the eggs they were sitting on. My daughters wouldn't collect eggs if a buttercup was in the nestbox. The Australorps were sweet egg machines. I you found one in the nest box, they just chuckled when you got the eggs. They've done well confined or free range. There have been times They're winter and summer hardy and survive neglect. They talk to me all the time and come to see what I'm up to when I'm near their run. I started letting them forage and they always come home well before dark and roost in the rafters of the run.

7 years later and only the big girls are left. Lost one to our Russell Terrier mix before she learned to leave the chickens alone. The last two still seem plenty healthy and lay 2-3 eggs a week if I remember to keep them fed and watered. We started having to buy "cardboard" eggs. Even the eggs from the local farm are disappointing, so I looked to start a new flock and all Australorps this time. The old girls took to the new members and the alpha came after me when I was cornering a pullet that had escaped from their garden.

Ok, I should have updated you guys, but thank you for all of the feedback! I decided to buy a Starlight Green Egger, and she is really sweet. Her name is Peep, and seems really calm and such. Maybe my next flock will be made up of some Australorps once all of my chickens have passed. Once again, thank you so much!!

Right now, I have 3 Cinnamon Queens & 2 Wyandotte chicks for egg laying. They are about a week old, and I am looking to buy one more, but I am not sure what breed I should get. One store in my town has some Australorps, and the other store is getting some more chickens in today. The Australorps seem pretty friendly, but I'm not sure if they are the best breed for egg laying. Does anyone have any suggestions for breeds? I am going to check in at the store to see what they have today. Thanks!!
Australorps are my favorite layers. If you are wanting nice large/xtra large light brown eggs, you can't go wrong with those girls.
