i'm planning on ordering some chicks sometime this week, but i'm not sure what breed would be best. i have had cornish crosses before, but i want to get some layers this time. i was thinking about plymouth rock, buff orps, rhode island reds, or welsummers. i live by a highway so i will definitely need something that will be ok fenced in most of the day.
i also have a question about roosters. i want to get one or two, if i did get two would they fight? thanks!

I think my Orphingtons have been the quietest birds that I have. They are the only ones that have went broody. If you have more than one rooster they probably would fight for dominance.

We have three roosters that came to us at different times. The banty silkie rooster has a Napolean complex and is in a coop with his hen so that he doesn't destroy my two breeding roos...one is an EE and the other is an RIR. Even amongst the two standard roos there was a bit of minor blood shed until they worked things out. Now they just stay out of each other's way and have their own batch of hens. But the EE is definitely the dominant one.

If i were to buy birds for eggs i would buy an EE, ive had alot of good experiences with them. My second choice would be Black Australorps, then the BRs

Get a few silkies so they can hatch and raise the babies of your laying breeds so you can have more for free. They do fine fence in, calm, friendly and every BYCer knows you have to have atleast a few silkies in your flock. I mean look at the signatures of the people replying, they all have them haha
