What breeds lay the dark chocolate color eggs? My first chickens are now 3 weeks old and I am already thinking of adding to them.

French Marans (not the Cuckoo ones from hatcheries though) such as Black Copper, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten, Blue Copper, Cuckoo, Golden Salmon, etc, lay some very beautiful, dark eggs.

These on the far left are laid by my Black Coppers and Blue Wheatens.

Welsummers lay a nice terra cotta color, too.

Thanks Illia. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy from?

If you only want chicks - Then go with what is available locally. Try searching Craigslist.

If you want something you see online, a lot of us are breeders and sell hatching eggs to incubate. I myself am one of those breeders, but check the Marans thread too - Plenty of people there willing to sell some hatching eggs. That way you know in person, too, what your chicks will lay when they grow up.
