Which breeds for kids?

I am relatively new to chickens. I have ten 2.5 week old pullets from a local hatchery (Shook Poultry). The breeds are Black Sex-Link, Golden Comets, and Barred Rocks.

Out of the ten, 7 are friendly. The other three range from aloof to don't even look at me funny. I imagine individual personalities and the hatchery/breeder lines play a role.

The three Golden Comets are super-friendly, nosy, active, and like being held. Three out of four of the Black Sex-Links are great. One in particular is the best, so calm, LOVES to be held. The fourth one just doesn't tolerate being handled or fast movements. Two of the Barred Rocks aren't friendly. One, the smallest, is a squawking maniac. So, based on my expierences the Barred Rocks are the least friendly. However, they are still young.

I'd say Buff Orps, Silkies, Brahmas, and Australops are known for being very docile and friendly. I have two pullets (Red Star and a Production Red) that I've handled since babies and they are the sweetest things ( like to be picked up and loved on) and think they should be house pets! So another factor is just how much time you spend with your little chooks. I have a 3 year old who is obsessed with them and they're very tolerant of him

Good luck and Enjoy them when you get them!

My granddaughter was afraid of the large chickens, BR, RR, Australorp, and LH until she experienced the behavior of our EE. She follows this chicken all over the yard, loves to hold it, and always wants it to sit with her. I just got 2 Brahmas because I heard they were very good with children as well.

We have had Australorps and Buff Orpingtons, and I'd say the better breed is BO by far. The Australorps tend to be skittish and very shy. The BOs are very friendly and will come right up to you. Very gentle too.
