Which breeds have you had good egg production from?

white leghorn. temperament depends on the individual leghorn. i've had leghorns that were skittish and unfriendly, but i've also had one that was extremely smart and would always go to the same spot to have me pick her up and put her back into the coop at dusk. although... she insisted on laying her eggs on a plastic ladder. which was pretty funny lol.
rhode island reds are noisy, maybe a bit unfriendly, but always great layers.
black sexlink are a cross, i guess a production hybrid, but i love them. long lived birds with great personalities, consistent layers.
i dont know why, but red sexlinks seem to be chock full of reproductive problems. they will lay good for a while, but then issues start to set in. i've always gotten daily big double yolkers from red sexlinks but i feel like that productivity wears them down overtime.

Every day I get one GIANT egg from my calico princess, she has never missed a day and she lays eggs twice the size of my normal rhode reds!

I have one amazing white leghorn who lays huge eggs daily for us, must get over 300 a year... but she is totally skittish and unfriendly to an extent, like shes never seen a human before.

Do you find that your Leghorns lay through winter?

Hello! So, I LOVE the friendliness and high egg production #'s coming from my Golden Comets (6-7 per week), however I don't like the reproductive issues that have started happening (egg bound, etc....) So, I'm needing some advice as to which chickens you've had the best egg output from..... I'll be adding close to 20 hens with the sole purpose of selling eggs and want breeds that can give me 5-6-7 eggs per week and is not a production hybrid. Any breeds you've had luck with??? Thanks!

Just wanted to thank everyone for their awesome feedback! This has definitely given me lots to think about and research! My next question is how to make sure I have hens who are producing all winter long, so my customers don't have a lull in service so to speak. Are most of these breeds good winter layers? I'm looking at Easter Eggers (although the hatchery I'm looking at says they only lay 150-200 medium sized eggs/year), Barred Rocks, and Australorps. Also, wondering about if the Australorps go broody, that would also lead to a drop in production. Just trying to weigh it all out. The hybrids obviously have all of these problems solved, however the reproductive issues have me a bit gun shy.

I have a Sussex Star & a Bluebell that have laid every day through the winter. The SS did not start until she was 7 months old but once she started she has not stopped. I got them from a local breeder who had a nice set up that you could walk around and look at each breed in their runs. UK based.

Mine are my Easter Eggers & my black australorp. Both give me between 5-6 eggs a week. My australorps are beautiful & very fun to have around. Their not huge cuddle bugs but they aren’t skittish as long as you raise them right. My Easter Eggers are a lot of fun to have around & tend to want to cuddle. Very friendly & mine have all been very food driven so I could train them easily. My only other breed that I love are my Sussex. My red speckled Sussex gals all give me 5 eggs a week & hardly slow down in the winter. Aka from 5 a week to 4-5. Super friendly. Love to cuddle. Drop dead beautiful birds.
