Hi and welcome to BYC. Commercially bred layers are the best egg producers, probably followed close behind by White Leghorns. Check out the breeds section for further information.
The high production birds tend to burn out by about 2 yrs. of age and have reproductive issues that shorten their life.No bird will lay 365 eggs a year, they go through molt and don't
lay, in cold, dreary days they generally slow down also. They are not machines, the stresses of life can also throw them off track.
Thanks for the info! do you know any other good laying chickens or is that it? and if i were to get around 4 chickens, should they all be the same breed?
The most you can ever expect from any hen is about an egg a day. Leghorns are known for their lower feed to egg production ratio, meaning they don't need to eat quite as much as larger breeds. Larger breeds, like Production Reds, sexlinks, Barred Rocks, and Wyandottes can be just as productive in terms of number of eggs a week, but they will need to consume more feed.
