Which breeds should I get?

I am looking to add a few more chickens to my flock and I have never owned or had any experiences with the breeds I'm looking at. I was looking at marans, Sussex, and I definitely want at least one crested polish (I understand they aren't great layers but ive always wanted one!). Any thoughts on these breeds? I am looking for the other breeds to be good layers and I do have a 3 year old son that helps me so would like some that are friendly. I appreciate any advise!

I love my Sussex girls! They are very beautiful and great layers. I've never had a maran but I've heard good things about them.

I see this post was back in April. What breeds did you decide on? Did you get more birds?
