i found a pigeon egg a few days ago but left it thinking the mother would come back but did not. i put it in a box within a box and a plate of water for humidity. we are going to get a bulb for heat tomorrow but what is the amount of watts that should be in it. the box is 12 by 12 inches

Candle the egg first; take a flashlight and, in the dark, shine the light through it. If the egg is clear or just a yolk you could try hatching it. If there is darkness within the egg discard it as it was brooded and the embryo has died. If it hatched the squab would have to be hand fed-a daunting task that would have to be done often. If your knowledge of pigeons is limited I'd recommend that you do some research.
If you know a teacher (science teacher) they may be able to provide an incubator. To hatch an egg the temperature and humidity has to be constant; hard to do with a light bulb in a box. Should you decide to make an incubator, there are plans online.
