Because hornets are soulless husks filled with spite, anger, and vitriol, armed with venom, and they can smell fear.

The "fear" they smell is called perfume. Anything flowery makes you a bug magnet.

Good suggestions so far. I would just add that make sure the cake is cooled completely before you try to add the icing. And make sure your icing is room temp

Also make sure you have enough icing. You often run into that problem because you have too little when trying to spread. Out a giant glob in the center and gently spread outward.
