As I read it I could not help but think there might have been just a bit of ball envy being revealedYep, they got totally out of control on the ball discussion last night
Yeah, I totally get it. Right now they would be outside eggs still, so it wouldn't be a closed system. But I see how it's not all that sustainable to feed them back their own shells. It's a little early but you can start at anytime. They might pick at it to see what it is, but they won't eat too much right now. Chickens are really good at self regulating, eating it when they need it. I suggest offering oyster shell instead of eggshells. The eggshells only have so much calcium in them and if they consume them and lay an egg, that shell will have less calcium. Does that make sense? I save my eggshells, smash them, then use them in the garden
This makes sense. As I read it I could not help but think there might have been just a bit of ball envy being revealed

Sorry to hear the weather is unpleasant Mac. Weather had cooled down here some but it suppose to shoot right back up to the triple digits again. It's fcking hot out here today. Plus super humid. Ick
You are a fool if you waste that food. With the price of things continually going up. Mix it in their current food if you want, or water it down to make a mash, they will eat it then. Offer only to the pullets if people have you freaking about the calcium for the cockerel. But don't waste itI don't know what to do with all these bags of food that are piled in my garage. I had to keep rebuying because the girls refused to touch almost all of it because they were pellets. And now I can't use the rest of the grower/starter or layer crumbles/pellets. *smh*
Ah well. Live and learn.
Or smash the pellets into crumbles with a hammer. You are a fool if you waste that food. With the price of things continually going up. There's nothing wrong with using grower and starter. That's what most of my birds eat all the time. And cockerels can eat calcium in layer pellets. Especially if they're going to be processed. Heck, I have a few nine year old males that lived on layer feed up until a few months ago.I don't know what to do with all these bags of food that are piled in my garage.
