i’ve known the guy who cuts my hair for over 20 years. we talk a lot during my haircuts. usually go out for lunch afterwards too.

Word. I've known the hottie who cuts my hair since we were 19. She does such a great job, I married her.

When I was in customer service, they encouraged the small talk. I always got in trouble because I never bothered. I greeted the person, did the transaction, then told them to have a good day. Easy peasy. I couldn't care less about how their day was going or what they were mad about or the million other things people want to whine about. I have enough friends

People talk to strangers here a lot more than in the rest of the country apparently.
And small talk is even taught as part of the "Southern" business protocol. It has become SO contrived however that now it's just annoying.
