Have you ever started a calf on a bottle that was previously on mom?

Yeppers. A little Limousine bull calf. He was so cute. And always took his bottle. And then his aunt rolled over on him. I was devastated.

In a cupboard under the stairs?

I suppose that would work to keep the mess contained.

I was thinking the freezer...

You got lucky. I have never had one just be like "Yes I will suck on this bottle - thanks!!"

He only got to nurse for a few hours before his mother had the audacity to keel over and die. The neighbors called to see if I'd want the calf to bottle feed. Dad wouldn't let me bring it home though so we had to drive up there to feed him. I did for about a week when that stupid cow rolled over and crushed him. I've no idea why they were keeping two other cows in the corral with him.

I went to Costco for 3 things. $175 later...

I got 2 kinds of blueberry bushes, a huge tomato plant, 2 types of peppers, pickling cuc and rosemary
