It’s about a guy who is a butthole to his girlfriend when his friends are around and acts like he‘s never seen her before and the whole musical is about how you have to change and become a completely different person in order for your boyfriend to not be embarrassed by your existence.

That summed up the entire 50’s gen, in all its sadness, exactly.
