I think BBQ came about because what most people originally used them for was to barbecue chicken so it kind of stuck as a slang (sorta) word for them.
To me BBQ is exactly that: To grill meat, and brush on BBQ sauce the last few minutes.
Down here we call ribs, chicken, beef whatever Barbecue as long as it has the sauce. If someone says they are getting BBQ then you know they are getting ribs, chicken or whatever that will have barbecue sauce on it or with it. We even call the restaurants that specialize in it The BBQ.

75% is about the highest I'll go where it still tastes good. After that it just gets too bitter.
