I “liked” for the effort to show them that one passed & that the chickens have apparently a good balance with them.

I get it
I don't really like sad reactions anyways. I was just pointing out their heartfelt loss and their love for their companions.

I have a similar pattern with our “pack” of dogs as well as the flock when one dies. Give them time to see & say goodbye to the one that passed away.

Yeah, whenever I lose a herd or pack animal I let them see so that they have some closure.
When I lost both of my shitzus I didn't show any bodies, but they heard the cars come and they heard both of them cry, I think that was enough, they grieved, hard.
It wasn't like when I rehomed the last shitzu, they saw her go and said goodbye, they didn't grieve.

We had a chicken named Feeney that was best best best friends with another chicken named Erik.
When Feeney died, Erik stopped laying eggs for almost a month.
It was extreme. I wonder if I should have not shown her it.
(Feeney died after a few weeks of being sick. Cancer maybe. She died in the house in our care.)

I had read something on BYC about showing an animal who passed to the others in their group and how much it helped to reduce grieving time. I do wonder if I use a method which dismembers part of the animal, how the rest would react. Would they be satisfied just seeing that the animal had died or would a missing part freak them out.
