Yeah I'm looking at the website and it does say there is a way to apply based on intent to use the trademark in commerce, but they would be researching your whole application and it sounds like I would need to at least be far enough into the breeding process to demonstrate intent.

I wouldn’t think it would be different from other patents

Patents and trademarks are a bit different from my understanding. A patent would be a new invention. So for example if I had a genetically modified gene or something I spliced in there, that - I could patent.

Sex linked hybrids are fairly common, I doubt someone could even "steal" the idea. Whatever it is has probably been done dozens of times by backyard breeders.
