Here's the national parks services breakdown.

TL;DR No one really knows HOW they got there, but the guesses are that they probably hitched a ride on a boat that was in the great lakes or mississippi and either pumped bilges in mead or just had them on the hull and lost them in the lake. It's bad for the B-29 though because they live at depths of up to 500 feet and they dissolve the aluminum skin of the plane when they encrust on it.
