Hi everyone,

After losing one of my Lohmann Browns recently, I am thinking of adding another two pullets to our remaining two girls (I have one Rhode Island White and one Lohmann Brown left).

I am thinking of adding either two Light Sussex or a Light and a Coronation Sussex, as they look lovely and seem to be good natured birds (hardy, docile etc).

Given our last girl was likely picked off by her sisters after having a prolapse (my detective work has lead me to believe anyway), do you think Sussex will be big and bold enough to fend for themselves?

I am hoping these breeds will be a good combo, but any advice would be appreciated!

I have Light & Speckled Sussex, they tend to be nice friendly birds, easy to get along with, they are not a problem in the flock at all... but nobody pushes them around either and they do tend to be pretty dominant over food (very food motivated). We don't have the Lohmann Brown RSL over here but have various other ones and they do fine with the Sussex, also have RIR (never had RIW), the RIR are the most likely to cause trouble, but don't remember ever having a problem specifically with them and the Sussex. Envy you the Coronation Sussex they are on my wish list.

I have 2 buff Sussex and a speckled Sussex they are lovely birds and very friendly and they love food !! And my friend has a pretty big flock with three light Sussex and believe you me, they are no push over.

. There's my speckled Sussex in the left corner, and 1 buff Sussex is trying to hide and the other buff Sussex is at the back the one at the front is a gold laced Wyandotte there all 14-16 weeks old. This shot was taken 5 mins after they were put in their new home

Fantastic @Kelsie2290 and @leghorn890 you have reassured me they are hardy birds capable of looking after themselves but also able to get along in a mixed flock
:ya

Excuse my ignorance, but can someone tell me what an RIR/RIW is?
:jumpy

@Mountain Peeps what a lovely girl, how sweet

@leghorn890 lol they're gorgeous- looking a little bewildered in the new digs I have to say, not for long though I'm sure!

Glad to hear the Sussex are also food motivated. My current girls free range all day and eat layer pellets in morning and before bed, so they haven't had much interest in my scraps thus far- except for watermelon and yoghurt- they can't get enough! So maybe the Sussex might finally appreciate my food offerings..
:weee :bun

Here's the girls in action enjoying some watermelon in the sun yesterday morning. It's supposed to be winter here!

@mja89 RIR is short for Rhode Island Red but I don't know what RIW is short for??

Ohh of course silly me. RIW must be a Rhode Island White which is one of my girls pictured above :D thank you!
