Awesome! That's what I'm looking for. Is your welsummer breeder stock or hatchery? Just wondering if that might have anything to do with it.

I'm sure the breeder stock would be more of a guarantee, however Wilma came from a farm here that bought their day olds last year from Privett hatchery

I strongly agree with Illia on hatchery stock. I know most people don't like to hear it but you simply will not get a dark egg from hatchery Marans. Unfortunately, they are typically no different than a RIR. First of all, the best colored (egg) birds do not lay a huge amount of eggs. That pretty much precludes them from ever being good hatchery birds. Secondly, even in the best of flocks a constant cull needs to be done to keep that color good. If you are looking for good color you simply need to go to a breeder. Research them carefully and ask for referrences. There is a reason that the prices are high for the best color- it takes time, expenses and dedication to keep a flock laying a good egg. Hatcheries do not have time to deal with selecting for traits. In the end you typically get what you pay for. Just be careful of those who have jumped on the band-wagon with $$$ in their eyes- hence the need for referrences. A good breeder will be honest and let you know what their weaknesses and strengths are- none of us have a perfect flock!
