OP says that one doesn't breed and only protects a few ladies

but the other one does breed, protects, but is mean towards humans

both are cockerels I'd cull, and continue to raise new cockerels up until I have one that protects, breeds, and is friendly

I'd keep the one who's not causing 'drama' out there, and who isn't biting. At six months of age, and having two cockerels, it's impossible to say that Freddie isn't right for this flock, as his competition leaves, and he matures.
Also, he's larger, so should produce larger birds for the table.
He may or may not be the right bird as he matures, time will tell...

I feel your pain on this OP. I have two roosters too. One is a maran, very expensive, bought for breeding, but his name is a dirty word because of how awful he is. He was raised by me. The other is a mutt, same exact age as the maran, but raised by a hen. He's the ideal rooster, except he bullies the maran. So is the maran mean because bullied to no end and wants to prove himself? He will even "tidbit" for the ladies, but they won't come because they know he's not the top dog, and as mean as he is, I can't help but to feel a little bad for him lol.

In my case I am going to rehome the maran after I get babies from him, but only because the neighbor said he wants him. I've already culled male offspring from the mutt, and not because they weren't good roos. They were great roos, but the household voted to keep the mutt dad and my girls can only handle so many men in their lives. Personally, I'd like to rehome the mutt, eat the maran, and let a broody raise the maran's offspring in hopes that they would be friendlier and I can pick a better male.

Anyways, my whole point was to say I feel your pain in choosing!
