I am trying to get buff columbian silkies.I have two questions.First, what color silkie?Second,do I use a silkie hen or roo?(I'm breeding them to buff bantam barhmas.)

Buff is one of the most complicated colors. Partly because there are different ways to arrive at the color buff - it can be "made" a few ways. When you breed birds who's buff types are different you get mixed results. Ask the gurus but they may well tell you it will be a difficult and long long process.

You may as well use a buff Silkie since you're going for buff in the long run. It's going to take a long time to get where you want to be since Silkie feathering is recessive, but if you're committed then I say go for it.

I have a young silkie pullet who is pretty close to buff columbian. Email me if you are interested in her.

I think that breeding buff silkies to buff brahmas is probably a good start. If you use at least two brahmas with separate sets of silkies, then you can breed the best offspring from each group together to re-concentrate the features you want & need.

For the brahmas, you are mostly interested in ones that have excellent colouring. Also select them based upon comb and foot feathering. Body type and skin colour are not things you need to consider much. If you can find one without the yellow skin that would be good.
