Which food processor?

We are looking to buy a food processor for our daughter....maybe for a Christmas gift or maybe just for helping us in the garden and doing so much canning. My wife doesn't have one, so we have no experience to draw from (might get one for her, too)... but dw's sister brought hers over and they made pepper relish. Canned 24 pints of it and dw and dd just went on and on about how nice it was to use....

So first of all is it something they would get a lot of use out of? If not what would you guys recomend instead?....

If you think a food processor would be a good gift, what kind, model #, etc??...

btw I've got a call in to dw's sis to find out about hers.

I WANT TO KNOW TOO!!! I have the Ultimate Chopper that I ordered off of TV and absolutely love it, but its not made for big time jobs, and I am scared I am going to ruin it, and you can't buy parts for these. Hope someone can help us both!!!

i have a very old cuisinart that needs replacing. while i love my kitchenaid stand mixer i'm not a fan of their other appliances (i'm a private chef so my equipment gets a workout). i was having a hard time chosing a machine, but found this article about the new cuisinart line in today's NYT interesting http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/16/dining/16cuisinart.html?ref=dining . i think i'll give this machine a look see. good luck.

I researched before buying mine four years ago and opted for the KitchenAid 12-cup (the largest size they make) version. I LOVE it. It doesn't leak out any liquid when pureeing soups or liquidy things, which I read could be a problem with the equivalent Cuisinart.

It was about $199 retail when I bought it. Go to Bed, Bath & Beyond and use a 20% off coupon for savings.

I also need a new processor. Can anyone recommend one that slices cabbage nicely - like to make sauerkraut? The one I have now does a very bad job of shredding anything and my coleslaw always looks chopped instead of shredded.

I love both the Kitchenaid and Cuisinart-never had any problems with the leaking from the Cuisinart. I've had it for 10 years and still going strong! Either brand is worth every penny in my book-good luck!
