We got our first egg Sunday, and each afternoon since (4 days in a row) when we go out between 4-5 there is another egg in the exact same spot, exact same size and color. I don't know which girl it is! Any ideas?

They all turned 22 weeks this past Sat. I have a Delaware, a BA, 2 Lt Brahmas, and 1 EE. They are all much louder this past week so I can't tell by egg song... If I go up to each one and try to pat it on the back, all of them try to move out of my way for the most part... the Delaware will let me pet her but if I press down she moves away. With the BA, if I pat down she squats each time. Today when I went to get the egg she kind of followed me to check me out. I suspect it is her because of the squatting, but I thought all of them were a little slower except for the Delaware.

I can't tell by butts or vents or anything else. They do it when I am not around.

What do you think?

It's a smallish light-med brown egg. Compared to an XL Costco egg, it's probably medium-sized.

I would guess the Australorp. They lay well. The Delaware will produce larger eggs and Brahmas are usually slower to mature.

ETA: also the squatting is usually a sign of egg laying or about to lay

I have found that the early eggs can be much smaller in the beginning and the color could be darker or lighter than it will be at maturity. SO, w/o seeing them actually laying the eggs --it is almost impossible to guess who is laying the eggs.. sorry maybe a more seasoned ckn owner can help..

I still haven't spotted any laying the egg, but I am fairly sure that it is the BA... she squats whenever we try to touch her when the rest aren't, and whenever I go to the egg door she is at my feet talking to me while the rest are somewhere else poking around. I hide the egg because I don't want her to be mad at me for taking it, but every day she's right there watching. Each one has been the same, in the same spot.... 5 days in a row. I am so proud of her!

FYI In another thread someone talked about ptting some dye on the feathers in the vent area. WHen the egg was laid , the dye was on the vent. YOu might try a search. GL

If you have a dog crate just put one in there for a day or two. then try another. my whole flock will have to pass the test this summer in order to make the cut.
