The feed stores in my area sell only "pidgeon" grit in 50# bags. Is this ok to start my chicks on? They are about 3 weeks old. Is there a specific type or brand I should look for. Big R didn't even know what grit was when I called, and tried to recommend scratch. If read that you sprinkle it over their food like salt.

Parakeet grit should be good for chicks of 3 weeks old. I have it for 6 week old birds but am going to add something a bit larger. Only give it if the chicks are eating anything other than starter formula (plants, scraps, dairy, bugs, scratch, BOSS, fruit, veggies, etc). I have only given my birds scratch and BOSS for 2 days, grit for three days. They love it! They seemed rather bored sitting on their roosts a few nights ago, so I remembered that scratch is good entertainment as well as functioning to help them stir up the bedding material which keeps it cleaner!

You can find parakeet grit in most pet stores.

Someone commented that parakeet grit had added calcium. I assume that the starter they are on has sufficient calcium. Will this over-supplement them with calcium? Clare
