I hope this is the right section for this question, I couldnt decide! What hatchery do you use? I would like to add a few maybe 4 chickens this spring to our flock of 10 but dont want to buy a large quanity. We are in Utah and IFA farm stores have chicks but have a reputation for a high percentage of roos. We have 2 roos already and dont need another! My son would like about 4 chicks also, so not a large order for sure.

My first order was from MPC. They were AWESOME. No pasty butt, and all three of my EEs are now laying various shades of green eggs. Shipping with them is expensive but their customer service is awesome!

My second order was McMurry via a local feed store. The first two chicks were shipped over the weekend; they had pasty butt for four days. The second two chicks came in a five days later and have no pasty butt. All are healthy and happy now. It was definantly less expensive to buy from the feed store/McMurry.

I used Nature's Hatchery in Naperville, IL, and I probably would not recommend them. I have had nine deaths over the course of 9 months from my batch of 30. I am not necessarily saying it is there fault, but my numbers seem really high granted I think I have pretty good sanitation. They hatchery is probably not of any fault, but why take the chance if there are so many other good hatcheries?

I must say however that they were very accommodating of my order of 30 birds of 12 different chicken breeds, 2 bantams, and two guineas.

They were kind of expensive ($112 total for my girls), but that is because they have many more rare breeds. They were the only place that I could find selling all four dark brown egg layers.

Fred's Hens :

4 chicks are very costly to pack and ship. Ouch.

Choices might be pick up the minimum at Tractor Supply or other feed store during their spring Chick Days. Many breeds are sex linked or identifiable as to sex.
Split an order with someone near you getting chicks? Ask around? Best wishes,

i agree feed store would be cheaper for you and they are sexed for you

I use Meyer Hatchery. They are reasonable price, I have only ever lost 1 chick from there. They are NPIP. The postage is less because they are only the next state over from us and the chicks arrive quickly.
