Which hay for my rabbits?

Thank you for that...somewhere hidden in the back of this old brain I thought there was a very good reason to feed them BOSS! I sprinkled in a few dried split peas yesterday. I feed the chickens BOSS for the same reason; they glisten in the sunlight.

The kits are growing like crazy so mamma must be feeding them well...they are so active, never realized they jump around so...I love watching them.

When do their eyes open?

I read through and saw that nobody mentioned this: BE CAREFUL WITH CALCIUM! You do NOT want calcium buildup in the urinary track of your rabbits. It can get to a point where they essentially are peeing calcium sludge. Very painful and very unhealthy for the bunny

Thats why I usually warn against the feeding of alfalfa to rabbits. SOME alfalfa is good, it is high in protein and is beneficial in small amounts. I give my herd 1 alfalfa cube (per bunny) a week just to grind their teeth on, since there hard. They also get an unlimited amount of mixed grass hay (fescue, Bermuda, orchard, prairie, etc.) , I'm feeding about two flakes a day with 14 bunnies, they just love it. If your feeding an alfalfa based pellet, then you don't need extra alfalfa, just a nice healthy hay.

A small handful of alfalfa per day is good and benificial to the rabbit. it should not be fed in large or unlimited ammounts like other hay.

If you feed other hay mix in a small ammount of alfalfa. I mean a small ammount, like the equivalent of like half a cup.

Whole grains such as oats and barly are very good for rabbits. The oils in them help with a lush and shiney coat. They have a high fat content, so only feed about 1 teaspoon per day.

just a quick question. What kind of green is BOSS?

The kits will start getting their eyes open around ten days. Around eleven or twelve days they should have their eyes open fully!

Thanks! Mamma must be feeding them well, they are plump lil things. Looks like I will have 8 dozen eggs to sell this week so I might have enough to buy BOSS for everyone and get a bale of Coastal, although not sure where I will store to keep it from getting wet. I'm just a BackYard farmer.

Yes, BOSS is Black Oil Sunflower Seeds.

Ok, I was kind of confused because Sumatra asked what kind of greens BOSS was. I was like 'What?!'

That's great

It's so nice when you get a good mom! Haven't experienced a bad mom yet though! How much is BOSS around where you live? It's only $.40 a pound! I'm thinking about stocking up, since I have a lot of mouths to feed

Do you have any tarps you could cover the hay with? I had my dad make me two storage bins out of plywood. He made them big enough to fit my hay in them. When I had my hay outside he put a lid on them so the rats wouldn't get into them. Worked very well! Kept the hay dry and pest free!

Now I have my hay in my rabbit barn so I don't need to worry about having wet hay.
